Pete the Vet: Worming Puppies

25.11.09

This morning Pete talks about worming puppies and kittens, and introduces us to Kiko, his new eight week old puppy.

The life cycle of puppy worms:

1. Worm cysts are present in bitch's mammary glands
2. When she produces milk, it contains worm larvae that are passed onto pups
3. As a result, nearly all pups are infected with worms at an early age.
4. Puppy worms can infect humans, even causing blindness in children (very rare, but possible

What needs to be done?

 - Puppies (and mother bitches) need to be given a good worm dose, from two weeks of age, repeated every two weeks until 12 weeks of age.
 - After that, a worm dose needs to be given once a month till 6 months of age.
 - Then adult dogs need to be given a worm dose every three months for their whole lives.
 - The story with kitten worms is very similar, except that they're a bit less likely to cause problem in children.
 - Different wormers are available, and it's best to ask your local vet for advice on this.
